Every adult working at Corner House Studio has a legal and ethical responsibility to keep the children in our care safe, supervised and supported**.**
Duty of Care also Includes
- Anticipating risks and preventing harm
- Responding quickly when something happens
- Prioritizing the needs of the children above personal convenience or comfort

The bottom line: if a reasonable, responsible adult would take an action to keep a child safe, we are expected to do it — every time.

What This Means for Teachers
1. Active Supervision, Always
- Stay engaged and aware when kids are in the studio—no “tuning out”
- Scan the room often, circulate, and stand or sit where you can see everyone.
- Never leave your class unattended, even “just for a minute.”
- Know where each child is at all times, including during bathroom/water breaks.
- Prep ahead so you don’t need to step out once kids arrive.
2. A Physically Safe Space
- Do a quick safety check before class: spills, cords, sharp tools, etc.
- Set up materials in safe ways to prevent accidents.
- Keep hot, sharp, or toxic supplies out of reach of younger children.
- Teach and model safe tool use (scissors, glue guns, clay tools, etc.).
- Hand out materials safely—no tossing or throwing (kids copy what they see).
