This is a first-week community-building activity for the Spring 2026 series (week of March 17). Each student contributes one small self-portrait label to a large collaborative piece that will be displayed in the studio — like a giant yearbook page featuring every artist.

📦 Materials

🟡 Teacher Note: Before class, set up one mirror per table and lay out labels and Sharpies. Cut or source the cardboard panel in advance. A good starting point: if using 2"×4" labels in a grid of 12 columns × 15 rows = 180 labels, the panel should be at least 26" wide × 62" tall (with a little margin). Adjust grid layout to fit your space and label brand.

🎨 Activity Instructions

At the start of the first class of the Spring series, set up tabletop mirrors at each table alongside a Sharpie marker and one white sticky label per student. Demonstrate for the class: look into the mirror, draw a simple self-portrait on the label using the Sharpie, and write your name underneath your portrait. Keep it simple and expressive — a face, some hair, maybe a smile. Once each artist finishes their label, invite them to bring it to the teacher, who will peel off the backing and place it onto the large cardboard panel displayed in the studio. As the class fills in their portraits, the collaborative piece grows into a giant yearbook-style installation featuring every artist in the studio.
